Ticker Symbol
Term category: Stocks
In 10 words or less:  An arrangement of letters that represent a security, such as a stock or mutual fund.

Definition: Ticker symbols are arrangement of symbols that represent a security.  Since they're only a type of abbreviation, it saves space in newspapers and such.

StockJargon Advice: The symbol can represent either an abbreviation for a company's name ("GE" is General Electric) or it can be something totally different. For example, Southwest Airlines' symbol is "LUV."

The longer you've been investing, you'll find that you can recall the ticker symbols for thousands of companies.
