Realized Gain
Term category: Stocks
In 10 words or less: The difference between what you paid for a stock and what you sold it for.

Definition: The gain that occurs when you sell an investment for more than you paid for it.

StockJargon Advice: When an investor has a realized gain on their investment, they have to pay a capital gains tax. This capital gains tax is usually taxed at their income tax bracket level, unless the investment was held for at least a year. If so, it's taxed at a lower rate.
