Term category: General Business
In 10 words or less:  A category classification based on the company's line of business.

Definition: Companies are categorized and placed into various industries based on their lines of business.  Some companies may fall into multiple industries.

StockJargon Advice: It's important to note that companies don't just compete against those in their own industries.  For example, Tempur-Pedic sells premium bed mattresses but saw its sales suffer when the auto companies began their employee pricing promotion in Summer 2005; people decided to use their money to buy cars rather than $2,000 mattresses.
