Term category: General Investing, Stocks
In 10 words or less:  A public market for buying or selling securities.

Definition: A public market for buying and selling shares of stock. The three major exchanges in the United States are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), and the NASDAQ.

StockJargon Advice: Exchanges give a place for people to buy and sell shares of stock. It could be a physical place, as it is with the NYSE and AMEX; or it could be a digital place, such as the NASDAQ.

The New York Stock Exchange is a cultural icon for the United States. Since 9/11, it has been closed to the general public. However, private tours are still available. I recommend going there and checking it out. I guarantee you'll be amazed.
